Checkweighers are important equipment in the food weighing, pharma checkweigher, and inspection industry. They help ensure accurate weight control, maximized efficiency, and consistent product throughput. Setting up a checkweigher for peak performance is not a luxury - it's critical to meeting your production obligations. We've outlined ten ways you can help ensure your checkweigher continues to minimize giveaways while ensuring your products meet label weight and nutritional information.
1. Mechanical calibration
Is the frame firmly attached to the ground? Are the conveyors all level and aligned? Without proper mechanical calibration, the weighing process will not meet specifications.
2. Photoeyes and rejectors
The location and operation of all photocells should be checked. The rejector should fire at the appropriate time to ensure that the rejected product enters the reject bin correctly.
3. Belt or chain
Check your belt or chain for wear or product buildup. Replace if necessary. Check the timing belt for wear, cracks, or missing teeth, which may result in inaccurate weights.
4. Product transfer
Does the product bounce or vibrate when it is transferred to the checkweigher? Are gaps between conveyor belts minimized? Stable products are heavier! Are the feed belt and the scale belt running at the same speed? This is critical.
5. Product spacing
Whether there is enough gap between products to ensure that no more than one product is on the weighing table at a time during the weighing process. If not you may need to speed up the feed to correct this.
6. Product settings
Make sure that the correct size and weight of the product are correctly entered into the product formula. Whether the cut-off point for overweight and underweight products is set to the correct product specification.
7. Calibration and auto-zero
If the checkweigher has been zeroed recently, it should be calibrated daily or when changing products. Is there enough clearance during production to adjust the autozero program?
8. Gray area verification
When was the last time you checked calibration? A grey area check should be performed before every shift or product change to ensure optimal weight each day. Make sure to run a package at least 20 times for statistically valid results.
Is the trigger for the alarm condition set correctly? A persistent alarm may be ignored by the operator.
Reports that provide batch, batch, or shift information on accepted/rejected quantities need to be formatted correctly to accurately represent production.
